WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Call to Worship

Psalm 19

Leader:     The heavens are telling the glory of God and the firmament proclaims His handiwork.

People:     The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul.

Leader:     Stand in awe of God, for His law and love endure forever.

People:           O God, let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in your sight.

Hymn

My Hope Is Built, Solid Rock

My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand.

When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found,
dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand.

Invocation and Lord's Prayer (Unison)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.  Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.  Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

CONFESSION OF SIN & ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Call to Confession (Unison)

Loving God, you have given us commandments to guide us in our living.  Yet, we choose to be obedient to false gods, worshiping the whims of the moment.  Forgive us our power without compassion, our strength without gentleness.  Forgive our human weaknesses and help us to admit them.  Help us live out your commandments of love and service. In your name.

Silent Confession and Assurance of Pardon

Response:   Thanks be to God!

 Affirmation of Faith, Apostles' Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell*; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic** Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.  Amen.

* ”hell” refers to the Hebrew word “Sheol,” a place of the dead, rather than the Hell of the final judgment.

** “catholic” is Latin for “universal,” implying the Christian unity that exists beyond all denominations.

Anthem

"Shout to the North”, Charlie Hall/ Martin Smith, 1995

Men of faith rise up and sing of the great and glorious King.  You are strong when you feel weak; in your brokenness complete.

Chorus:  Shout to the North and the South, sing to the East and the West. Jesus is Savior to all, Lord of heaven and earth. Rise up women of the truth. Stand and sing to broken hearts who can know the healing power of our awesome King of love.  Shout…
We've been through fire we've been through rain; we've been refined by the power of your name

We've fallen deeper in love with you.  You've burned this truth on our lips.  Shout …
Rise up church with broken wings; fill this place with songs again of our God who reigns on high; by God’s grace again we'll fly.  Shout…

Pastoral Prayer of the People

Scripture Reading

Revelation 20:1-9

Sermon

“Sometimes the Dragon Wins,” Rev. Cress Darwin

Closing Hymn

The Church’s One Foundation, Aurelia

The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord.   She is his new creation by water and the word.
From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride. With his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died.

Yet she on earth has union with God, the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won:

O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, may live eternally.
