GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Call to Worship

Leader:     Increase your love for one another and give thanks to God.

Hymn

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, Ein feste Burg

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing.  Our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe.  His craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right man on our side,
the man of God's own choosing.   Dost ask who that may be?  Christ Jesus, it is he.  Lord Sabaoth his name,
from age to age the same,  and he must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed
his truth to triumph through us.   The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him. His rage we can endure,
for lo, his doom is sure.  One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth.  The Spirit and the gifts are ours
through him who with us sideth.  Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also.

The body they may kill; God's truth abideth still.    His kingdom is forever.

Invocation and Lord's Prayer (Unison)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.  Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.  Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

CONFESSION OF SIN & ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Call to Confession (Unison)

God of many blessings, we forget all that we have.  We are shattered when misfortune strikes and fail to see anything good.  Forgive us our lack of perspective.  Remind us of all that we do have and help us to quit focusing on what we do not have.  Forgive us those times when we have been careless with your creation, careless with each other, and indifferent to the problems surrounding us.  Restore to us your grace, mercy and peace.

Silent Confession and Assurance of Pardon

Response:   Thanks be to God!

 Affirmation of Faith, Apostles' Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell*; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic** Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.  Amen.

* ”hell” refers to the Hebrew word “Sheol,” a place of the dead, rather than the Hell of the final judgment.

** “catholic” is Latin for “universal,” implying the Christian unity that exists beyond all denominations.

Closing Hymn

Great Is Thy Faithfulness, Faithfulness

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father; there is no shadow of turning with thee.
Thou changest not; thy compassions they fail not.  As thou hast been thou forever wilt be.

Refrain:  Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning, new mercies I see.
All I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
join with all nature in manifold witness to thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. [Refrain]

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,
strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow: blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! [Refrain]

Benediction and Choral Response

Amen, Danish
