Congregational Meeting

A Congregational Meeting will be held Sunday, May 16, 2021 after the 10:30 service in the sanctuary to elect the Elder Class of 2024, the Deacon Class of 2024, and the 2022 Nominating Team members.




The slate of church leaders being put forward by this year’s nominating team are:

Elder Class of 2024

Ken Carrington was born in Grovetown, GA and has two sons, Tripp and Beckett. He runs the audio/visual aspects of worship, teaches kindergarten at SPK, and is an announcer for the River Dogs and College of Charleston and a musician. He plays the flute, bagpipes, and Irish whistle and loves sound design, being a DJ, and teaching the children’s sermon.

Brittany Cogdill Jones is originally from Spartanburg, SC. She first started coming to Second Presbyterian in 2006, when she attended the College of Charleston and MUSC College of Pharmacy. After graduating residency in 2012, she was lucky enough to stay on at MUSC as a clinical pharmacist. Brittany officially joined the Second Presbyterian family in 2018 and has been part of the Young Adults Bible Study and Women’s Podcast Group. She lives in North Charleston with her husband Matt, daughter Ember, two dogs and three cats. In her spare time, she loves reading, scrapbooking, live music, and going to hockey games.

Patterson Smith has been a member of Second Church for over 30 years. During that time, he has served as a Deacon, an Elder, and Chair of several committees. Currently, he serves as the church treasurer and co-chairs the Property Committee. Patterson and his wife, Debbie, are both active in church activities.

Nathaniel R. Walker is from Little Rock, Arkansas and Tennessee. He and Sally have two children and a dog Archie. He is a Professor of Architectural History at College of Charleston. Nathan specializes in the history of public space such as squares and streets, and the ways in which architecture has been drafted into the social and political power systems that alternatively divide or unite people across the jagged, intersecting lines of race, gender, religion, class, etc.




Deacon Class of 2024

Kelsey Cochrane has been married to her husband Stuart for coming up on four years. She is a dental hygienist and an Air Force Reservist. In her spare time she loves going on walks with my boxer mix Bo, reading, and cooking. She and Stuart joined 2nd Presbyterian shortly after moving to Charleston from West Virginia and she really looks forward to serving the church. 

Jim Kimmett Is originally from Baltimore and moved to South Carolina in 2006 after a career with the US Air Force and then the NSA that led him around the world. He and his wife of 52 years, Kathryn, raised 6 children and were together 54 years before her death in 2008. Jim met Robbie Staubes in 2012 and became involved here at Second Pres as a consequence.

Dawn McCready and her husband, Rob, joined Second Presbyterian in 2017. They moved to Charleston two years ago from Old Greenwich, Connecticut. She has been a very involved member and she and Rob are responsible for the re-illuminated bell tower and stained glass in the sanctuary.

Debbie Smith is a native of Charleston and is retired from MUSC. She has been a member of Second Presbyterian Church since 1985 and has served and volunteered in various ways throughout the years. She is an avid gardener, enjoys word games, playing in the bell choir, travel and spending time with family and friends. Debbie has also volunteered her time in the community tutoring young children in reading. She lives on James Island with her husband of 46 years, Patterson and their two Chihuahuas. She has two grown children.



2022 Nominating Team

Jessica Brock (elder) is from Hanahan, South Carolina. She graduated from Presbyterian College and then from St. Catherine University with M.Ed.  She is a Primary Montessori teacher at Hursey Montessori School in North Charleston. She has two children, Clay (15) and Lilly (12).  She joined Second Presbyterian Church in 2018.  She enjoys spending time with her children, baking, reading, crafting, and going to the beach. She is serving the team as an elder representative.

Sydney Derrick grew up just down Highway 17 in Beaufort and then graduated from College of Charleston. More than a decade later, she made her way back to the coast after a stint in Columbia, where she met and married her husband Josh. They have one daughter, Anna. In her work life, she handles communications & wellness programs for a small health insurance broker, is a metadata and research assistant with Avery Research Center, and is getting her master’s degree in library and information science. In her spare time, she loves paddle boarding, running, and the beach. ⁠

Domonique German has taught youth Sunday school for years and joined Second Presbyterian in 2019. She is on the board of the Tywanza Sanders Legacy Foundation and serves as treasurer. She and her husband Fred live in North Charleston.

Brad Milner was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is a graduate of University of Georgia, and lives on James Island. Brad’s children, Bradshaw and Buckley, went to SPK and he has served on Session, as chairman of the Grounds Committee and the Men's Society and is currently involved in the Men’s Bible Study.

Sarah Mitchell - After twenty plus years in St. Louis, Sarah and her husband, Marion, moved to Wadmalaw in 2011 and joined the Second family in 2012. She taught high school math and currently tutors at the Shaw Center. She enjoys conferences, crafts, and the bell choir. She is the clerk of session and is serving the team as an elder representative.

Jordyn Pritchard is from Peachtree City, Georgia and attended the University of Georgia where she graduated with honors with a BFA in art and a minor in religion. She lives in West Ashley with her husband, Aled, and three small children- Lachlan (9) and twins Penelope and Blair (5). Raised Baptist, Jordyn found a home in the Presbyterian Church by way of her Scottish husband and they have been members of Second Presbyterian since 2014.

Nicole Schuerman moved to Charleston in 2016, joined Second in 2017 and has since frequently served as our greeter on Sunday mornings. She grew up in the Presbyterian Church in Illinois and loves to travel and read. She is serving the team as the deacon representative.
