Second Church takes seriously the baptismal vows to partner with families to help raise children in the faith. Children’s ministry at Second is vibrant, interactive and experiential as we seek to help children experience God’s transformative love. Watch children’s sermons here.
Sunday School @ 9:30 a.m. downstairs in the SPK hall with Mrs. Robbie and Mr. Ken.
Children’s Chapel @ 11:00 a.m. after the Children's Time* during the service each Sunday, for children 6th grade and under (+ youth volunteers). Children are invited to Chapel for a time of fun and faith formation to learn songs, Bible basics, and how worship is a continuous response to God’s grace.
Children & Youth Sundays are usually the third Sunday of each month. We welcome the children’s choir, a youth liturgist, children and youth ushers, and their help with a lemonade stand to benefit missions on the portico after church on these special Sundays.
*The nursery is available for little ones, but we ask that those who can to please start out in the service to join us in worship until Children's Time, after which children 6th grade and under are welcome to Children’s Chapel.

Throughout the year we host special events such as:
- Easter Egg Hunt: Children from First(Scots) and Second Presbyterian come together at our church for a fun morning together.
- VBS: Community Vacation Bible School is in June.
- Homecoming Sunday: a special Sunday at the beginning of each academic year where we recognize our milestone years within the church.
- Blessing of the Backpacks: the time in the year where we send our young people, and teachers, back to school knowing God is always with them!
- Trunk or Treat: before Halloween we gather for an evening of intergenerational fun and fellowship for our community. Children are able to sport their Halloween costume early!
- Advent Crafts: this is an evening of crafts for children to begin to prepare and experience the Advent Season.
- Christmas Pageant: each year our children present the Christmas story.
Join us on Sunday mornings and at these occasional special events as we help children experience God’s love in fun and authentic ways. Contact: Director of Children and Youth, Ken Carrington
“A GOOD ENOUGH LENT” for YOUTH
SUNDAYS 9:30 a.m. | UPSTAIRS IN THE CONFERENCE ROOM
A 6-week Lenten study engaging the world as it is -- beautiful, meaningful, difficult, and challenging. Middle and high schoolers will meet with Jordyn in the conference room upstairs for this “donuts and devotions” Bible study.
Text “@2pc-youth” to 81010 to get youth ministry reminders and announcements.
At Second, we value the impact our young people have within our congregation and community. Our youth serve as ushers, liturgists, and musicians in worship.
Confirmation class for 8th grade+ students who have not yet been confirmed will begin soon.
There are multiple ways for youth to volunteer throughout the year and each summer at VBS. We participate in week 2 of the Montreat Youth Conference and the Middle School Conference in July. In addition to those life-giving summer trips, we also take a group to Bethelwoods. There are so many ways for our young people to find community within this place— we hope that you will join us!
Please reach out to Ken, our Director of Children and Youth, for more information. Youth interested in joining the choir can contact our Director of Music, Julia Harlow.
“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17)
We know that Godly men pray. They always have; they always will. So that’s where we start — with a Willingness to Pray. We ask God for his ideas on how to move forward in our lives and in our fellowship.
We Create a Place for Connection: We want 2ndPC men to grow deeper in their walk in Christ with other men, but that won’t happen unless we are connected. We currently meet each month on the last Saturday morning for fellowship, good food and a short message delivered by a guest speaker. We attend sporting events together. We host interesting speaking events for the entire congregation to attend. And we are constantly on the lookout for new and interesting endeavors, both indoors and outdoors, in Charleston and beyond.
We Create a Safe Place for Sharing: The men who come to the Men’s Society events know that what is shared around the table stays around the table, especially as we’ve discussed our professional and personal lives, our families and our marriages within the context of scripture. Men who come have said it’s a lot easier to discuss these issues with other men than in a mixed-gender small group setting.
We Create a Culture of Invitation: The Men’s Society events are successful because of the personal invitations we extend to men to participate. The Saturday morning breakfast exists because of the personal invitations we extend. Announcements and bulletin notices are great for getting the word out, but personal invitations are more personal and work best.
We Create a Culture of Service: Men want to serve alongside their brothers. They want to serve their church and community. We are developing a culture of service in our group’s DNA — whether it is assisting another church mission (like the annual Tea Room) or doing yard work for senior members of the congregation. There is a sense of excitement as we plan ways to serve our community — both within the church and outside it.
Do you want to become a better son, brother, father or husband? Do you want to become a better Christian? Then come out and join us for our next 2ndPC Men’s Society event.

The older generation that has held Second Church together for so many years, through its good times and its bad, is forever treasured among our congregation and what truly makes us an inter-generational church.
That being the case, we don't separate the "older and wiser" into a self-contained ministry, but instead welcome them into the vibrancy of our many worship, fellowship and service opportunities.
Second Presbyterian has several members who reside at the Presbyterian Village in Summerville and in other assisted living situations in the Charleston area. We keep in touch through weekly mailings of the church bulletin and regular visits from the pastor and our Care Team members.
