Dear Friends in Christ –

“Cress, you know the center of the universe can be very crowded,” my buddy and confessor told me. “What?” I looked up and saw him smiling in a slightly indulgent way. He knew that most of us are so centered on ourselves that its not beyond the realm of possibility that even the resurrected God of the cosmos sidles up beside us and we barely notice!

This is what happens as two forlorn disciples trudge home toward Emmaus to who knows what awaits them. Their world is crushed.

And yet we find that the risen Jesus does what he did – he surprises, he intrudes, teaches, admonishes, he loves them.

As each day seems to report another atrocity, we are called to gather, to position ourselves for grace and for duty in obedience and in hope.
