Women's Circle Bible Study: Let Justice Roll Down

Let Justice Roll Down: God’s Call to Care for Neighbors and All Creation

Come for a time of Bible study and fellowship where women are invited to get together on the third Monday of each month from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Robbie Staubes’ home in Mount Pleasant.

September through May we will get together to consider how scripture reminds us that we are called to speak out to urge our society to act for just transitions in this fast-changing world.

We are called to care for neighbors and God’s creation with all our hearts, with particular care for society’s least powerful members who are disproportionately impacted by unjust systems. In God’s first instructions to the nation of Israel we hear “you shall not pervert the justice due to the poor” (Exodus 23:6); in Moses’ final speech at the promised land’s border, he reiterated, “Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue” (Deuteronomy 16:20); and from Amos, the earliest recorded prophet, “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an everflowing stream” (Amos 5:24).

Sacred Encounters: The Power and Presence of Jesus Christ in Luke-Acts

Come for a time of Bible study and fellowship where women are invited to get together from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Robbie Staubes’ home in Mount Pleasant.

September through May we will get together to consider Jesus and Jesus’ disciples who shared the Good News through sacred encounters with everyday people.

The Gospel According to Luke and the book of the Acts of the Apostles, or Luke-Acts, “one story in two parts,” demonstrate the unfolding of God’s redemptive purposes in human history and present a distinctive perspective on the person and work of Jesus Christ. Written by Luke, a physician and traveling companion of Paul, the message to the early Christian community (and to us) is radical, inclusive, and hope-filled.

Celebrating Sabbath: Accepting God’s Gift of Rest and Delight

Come for a time of Bible study and fellowship where women of all ages are invited to get together from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Robbie Staubes’ house in Mount Pleasant.

September through May we will get together to consider Sabbath

  • as a celebration, not a day of dreary formality

  • as God’s intent for all of creation and that includes busy women too

  • as one day of the week, perhaps a Sunday

  • as a time to surrender unhealthy striving and frantic busyness, and instead trust God will provide

  • as a reminder that life is precious and working too much is against God’s plans for our precious lives

  • as a day devoted to community and justice and not exclusively to self-care

Ultimately, Sabbath reminds us to honor God who
honors us by giving us a day each week to reset our pace, our priorities, and our lives. Friends and visitors are welcome.

Extra copies of the lesson are made available in the narthex ahead of each meeting.

Into the Light, Finding Hope Through Prayers of Lament presents a Biblically based approach to facing troubling times, which meets the moment as we face a year of collective grief. You can get a copy of the PW Horizons Bible Study Into the Light if you'd like, but it is not required.

This study is for anyone hoping to deepen his/her/their relationship to God through Bible study, community, and prayer. The group will be led by members on a rotating basis and is open to the community.

“In this nine-lesson study, Lynn Miller revives lament as a proper theological response to the difficult situations of our world. One of the foundational points of the study is that, in scripture, lament usually leads to hope. After crying out to God, the one who laments remembers God. And while that doesn’t fix things in the moment—the injustice, the loss still exists—the lamenter is strengthened to face the world and to hope. And for us as Christians, hope is not just an emotional response or an attitude of pie in the sky. Hope implies movement: both God’s inherent movement toward justice and our movement toward God. Recovering lament may be one of the church’s most timely gifts to the world.”
